Last Week: The men's soccer team opened the season by hosting the ninth annual MSU/Radisson Fall Classic. Friday's game was the first for MSU in the new DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field and approximately 1,500 saw the Spartans down St. Francis (Pa.), 4-0, with the help of two goals from All-Big Ten senior Doug DeMartin (Mason, Mich.). In the weekend's final match on Sunday, Vermont held off the Spartans final charge to win 2-1 and even MSU's record to 1-1 on the season.
This Week: The Spartans hit the road to take part in the University of New Mexico Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. Friday (Sept. 5) MSU will take on host New Mexico at 9:30 p.m. EDT and will face off with UC-Davis at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 7).
Schedule Change: The Spartans September 12 and 14 games of the Wolverine Classic will now be played in East Lansing at DeMartin Stadium instead of in Ann Arbor. Friday's match against Buffalo will be played at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday's game with UIC will be played at 2:30 p.m.
Notes: Doug DeMartin recorded his fourth-career multi-goal game in scoring two goals in the season-opening win over St. Francis (Pa.). DeMartin led the Big Ten in goals last season with 12 ... Sophomore Spencer Thompson (Shelby Twp., Mich.), senior Zac Scaffidi (Geneva, Ill.) and senior Josh Rogers (Sterling Heights) all scored for the Spartans this past weekend ... In his first career start, Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jeremy Clark (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had in two saves in the team's 4-0 win over St. Francis (Pa.).

Last Week: MSU remained undefeated with a pair of 3-0 road wins over DePaul (Friday) and Bowling Green (Sunday). The Spartans are now 3-0 this season. Junior forward Lauren Hill (Northville), who missed the season opener vs. Oakland, quickly made her presence known as she scored two goals in each of this past weekend's games and was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week by the conference office.
This Week: The women's soccer team will play its first game in DeMartin Stadium on Friday (Sept. 5) when it hosts Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. The Spartans host Loyola (Ill.) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Notes: Hill's back-to-back two-goal games were the third and fourth multi-goal games of her career...Hill is the second Spartan this season to be named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week as freshman Laura Heyboer (Hudsonville) earned the honor in the first week of the season ... Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege (Portage) has allowed just one goal this season. Since giving up a goal against Oakland, she has a 237:10 scoreless streak ... Sophomore forward Cara Freeman (New Lenox, Ill.) has scored one goal in each game this season and is third on the team in points with seven ... Heyboer picked up two assists in Sunday's win over Bowling Green and leads the team in points with nine ... Last week Heyboer was one of 15 players nationally to be named to the SoccerBuzz.com Elite Team of the Week.

Last Week: The Spartans opened the season at the Champions Invitational Tournament, hosted by Louisville. On Saturday, Michigan State posted a 3-2 win over Delaware, advancing to the championship game. On Sunday, senior Gwen Riley (Louisville, Ky.) tallied two goals and two assists to help the Spartans to a 6-1 win over 17th-ranked Louisville. Freshman Chantae Miller (East Amherst, N.Y.) recorded her first career point in the win.
This Week: MSU plays its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. against Stanford. The Cardinals are 0-1 on the season with a loss to Drexel. On Sunday, the Spartans host Syracuse at noon. The Orange posted a 5-0 win over No. 8 Old Dominion last Sunday.
Notes: Junior goalie Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) made four saves at the Invitational, and is 2-0 this season ... Riley leads the team in scoring with three goals and three assists for nine points ... For the 14th time in 37 seasons, the Spartans opened with back-to-back wins ... The Spartans won the Champions Invitational Tournament for the third time in five years ... Michigan State opened the season ranked 10th in the STX/NFHCA Preseason Poll.

Last Week: The men's and women's cross country teams opened the season by competing in the Jeff Drenth Memorial 5K hosted by Central Michigan University. Senior Shane Knoll (Warren, Mich.) took first place with a time of 15:33.3 in the men's race, followed closely by teammate Spencer Beatty (Harbor Springs, Mich.) who took second place and ran 15:36.3. Sophomore Joe Dimambro (Flint, Mich.) took fourth with a time of 15:39.8. In the women's race, Thereseann Zimmerman (Gaylord, Mich.) was the top Spartan finisher, taking second place with a time of 18:41.7. She was followed by teammates Carlie Green (Milford, Mich.) (18:48.5), Rebekah Smeltzer (Monroe, Mich.) (18:48.7) and Laura Portis (Richland, Mich.) (18:49.1) who finished in third through fifth place, respectively.
This Week: The Spartans are off this week but return to action Friday, Sept. 12 when they host the Spartan Invitational at Forest Akers East Golf Course.
