EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf scored the second lowest round of the day on Sunday to finish fourth at the Wolverine Intercollegiate this weekend at the U-M Golf Course. The Spartans carded a third round five-under par 279, tied for the sixth lowest in program history, to move their tournament total to four-under 848 (286-283-279).
Sophomore Graham Baillargeon improved eight spots on the leaderboard on Sunday, after shooting a three-under par 68. Baillargeon moved to four-under 209 (71-70-69) and into a tie for sixth. He posted five birdies today and had 11 on the weekend.
Classmate Payne Gniewek matched his second round score of two-under 69 today, to move to a tie for 22nd at one-over par 214 (76-69-69). Gniewek posted only one bogey on the day and ended the weekend with eight birdies, all in the final two rounds.
Junior Jack Newman was a stroke behind Gniewek, ending in a tie for 28th at three-over par 215 (71-72-72), while senior Jordan Ensrud tied for 31st at four-over 216 (70-72-74). Senior Randy Hutchison had the third-best Spartan score on the afternoon, posting an one-under 70. He concluded the event in a tie for 52nd at seven-over 220 (74-76-70).
Playing as an individual, junior Andrew Ladwig tied with Ensrud in 31st with a four-over 216 (73-69-74).
Michigan won the tournament with an 11-under par 841 (282-275-284), finishing two strokes ahead of UC Davis. Meanwhile, UC Davis' Ramie Sprinkling took home the individual crown, at seven-under 206 (69-68-69).
After a week off from competition, the Spartans return to action on Oct. 6-7 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
