EAST LANSING, Mich - Michigan State men's tennis defeated Cleveland State (5-2) and Youngstown State (7-0) Saturday, Jan. 24 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The wins continued the Spartans four-match win streak to begin the 2009 season.
MSU started the day out strong winning the doubles point against Cleveland State with teams of John Allare and Jason Norville, and Clark Richardson and Alex Forger picking up wins.
Four of the six singles matches came out a Spartan victory as Alex Forger, Austin Brooks, Scott Rasmussen and Brendan Kinkopf defeated their opponents. Brooks clinched the win for the Green and White in a close match against Ryan Hamning of CSU, winning in tie breaking sets, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4). Rasmussen picked up a win going into a third match, outplaying Viking opponent Yannick Goosens, 4-6, 7-5 (10-8).
The doubleheader continued with all three MSU doubles teams picking up wins against Youngstown State. Norville and Allare posted an impressive 8-1 win over Steve D'Angelo and Robert Emig, while teammates Clark Richardson and Ronnie Hulewicz posted the same record over Patrick Hamning and Christopher Leson.
Forger, Brooks, Rasmussen, Norville, Hulewicz and John Stratton all posted wins over their singles opponents to sweep the Penguins. Stratton dominated his match against Christopher Leson defeating him 6-0, 6-0.
"I think we played very well overall," said head coach Gene Orlando. "It's tough doing two matches in one day but we have improved since last week and I'm pleased with that. Cleveland State was a tougher team to play and I think we dropped some losses we could have won. To their credit, they have a solid team and we got control and were able to take away the win."
Michigan State will play in its third-straight doubleheader at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility next Saturday, Jan. 31 against Western Illinois and Valparaiso. The Spartans are now 4-0 on the season as well as at home.
