Women's Tennis Opens Play at Wildcat Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Five Spartans from the Michigan State women's tennis team hit the road this weekend to compete in the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern. The tournament lasts from Friday, Oct. 9, through Sunday, Oct. 11, with play beginning each day at 10 a.m.
Freshmen Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia) and Nicole Herzog (Manilia, Brazil), sophomore Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia), junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) and senior Christine Milliken (Traverse City, Mich.) were the five Spartans who participated for the Spartans at the invitational.
In Flight A doubles, Barton and Ivanova started out the day as partners. The tandem fell to Ciobanu and Reilley of Notre Dame, 8-5. In the backdraw, they went up against Pantusart and Jogasuria of Akron, where they lost, 8-2. The doubles tandem then faced Ferrazzi and Palen of Minnesota, where they lost 8-4.
In Flight B doubles, Herzog and Wilson teamed together to face off against Wiecha and Forsyth of Minnesota, but fell, 8-4. They went to the backdraw where they played against Berna and Chupa of Wisconsin and put up four points to their eight, tallying the same score.
Milliken partnered with Parks of Oklahoma to take on Gambrell and Gustafson of DePaul, but came up short, 8-1. They were then defeated my Denny and Nivia of Western Michigan, 8-5.
Singles action will begin tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. at the University of Northwestern. Check back with msuspartans.com for a complete recap at the conclusion of action.
