EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Basketball Putt-Putt Challenge was held Oct. 7 at The Little Hawk Putting Course at Hawk Hollow Golf Course in Bath, Mich. The event featured 12 foursomes, consisting of at least one member of the Spartan men's basketball team paired with members of the media from around the state of Michigan.
Teams used the best three scores from their foursome on each hole to arrive at the team score. Team Thornton, consisting of Jack Doles (WOOD-TV), Matt Steigenga (Spartan Sports Network), Doug Herner (MSU Basketball) and Austin Thornton won the competition with a team score of 14-under par.
The event began with a special video greeting from Jim Nantz and Verne Lundquist from CBS Sports. Caddies, wearing Buick Open caddie bibs and carrying placards with the name of their team and the individuals, then led the golfers out to the course. During the round, golfers had to deal with the antics of on-course commentator Tim Bograkos.
Little Hawk is one of just a handful of natural grass putting courses in the United States. The par-54 bentgrass layout features undulating greens winding through picturesque landscaping. Sand traps, rough and water can come into play on various holes.
Thanks to general manager Alex Coss and director of marketing Terry Kildea and the entire staff at Hawk Hollow. Additional thanks to Doug Brody, the PGA head professional at Warwick Hills for the Buick Open caddie bibs and walking score holders. Thanks to Skyline Outdoor for the winners check and to Vision Creative for creating a logo for the event.
