EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State track & field team participated in its lone 2009 indoor event when it hosted its intra-squad scrimmage on Friday, Dec. 11. The men's high jump team highlighted the event with three heights of 2.08m (6-10) or higher. Leading the way with his height of 2.10m (6-11) was sophomore Cliff Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich.). "Tonight we competed in seven events which are contested at the Big Ten Championships," said director of track & field and cross country Walt Drenth. "Based on the past three years, we would have had 10 women and 12 men score for the team. So, it was really great to see the depth of performance and the quality of the individuals."
The women's side was led by junior Erica Mann (Battle Creek, Mich.) in the 60m dash with a time of 7.49 seconds.
"I am certainly pleased with her time tonight. Erica is a competitor and we need her to do well. Her mark is certainly good this early in the season," noted Drenth."
The men certainly saw a competive race in the 60m in which junior Shane Wells (Romulus, Mich.) defeated junior Yury Ratomski (Novi, Mich.) by one one-hundreth of a second, posting times of 6.87 and 6.88, respectively.
In the long jump, junior Marva Goodson (Saginaw, Mich.) led the women with her jump of 5.78m (18-11 ¾). The men's long jump saw junior Kyron Foster (Deltona, Fla.) post a mark of 7.35m (24-1 ½), while sophomore Durant Crum (Albion, Mich.) recorded a distance of 7.04m (23-1 ¼).
In the shot put, freshman Zack Hill (Zeeland, Mich.) led the men with his throw of 16.53m (54-3). Sophomore Lonnie Pugh (Grosse Ile, Mich.) followed with his mark of 16.40m (53-10), while sophomore Aaron Ide (Byron Center, Mich.) posted a distance of 16.15m (53-0). The women were led by junior Ashley Lawrence (Troy, Mich.) and her distance of 15.10m (49-6 1/2). Sophomore Catherine Daniels (Whittemore, Mich.) followed Lawrence with her throw of 14.47m (47-6), while freshman Shatora Lewis (Toledo, Ohio) tallied a mark of 14.00m (45-11 1/2).
Posting a distance of 19.15m (62-10) in the men's weight throw was sophomore Jay Gillespie (Allen Park, Mich.). Pugh followed with a throw of 18.17m (59-7 1/2).
The men pole vaulters also had a successful evening in which junior Logan Lynch (Lambertville, Mich.) led the way with his height of 5.04m (16-6 1/2). Freshmen Codi Mattix (Saranac, Mich.) and Derik Peterman (Livonia, Mich.) each posted marks of 4.73m (15-6 1/2).
"Tonight, we tried to create a format which was fun and exciting for the kids, but that had something on the line. The losing team tonight has to clean up tonight," added Drenth.
The Spartans open the indoor season on Friday, Jan 15, 2010, when they travel to Lexington, Ky. for the Kentucky Invite.
