EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 70 Michigan State women's tennis team returned home for a weekend doubleheader against Bowling Green and Cleveland State. The Spartans opened the day by defeating BGSU 7-0. Bowling Green was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and the No. 6 singles match due to only being able to play five student-athletes. In the nightcap, the Spartans continued their earlier success against Cleveland State, defeating the Vikings 7-0. In both matches MSU was able to get the doubles point to gain important momentum heading into singles play.
Recording a perfect 4-0 record on the day was Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.). Kebler took to the court in her afternoon match against Kelsey Jakupcin of Bowling Green. Setingt the tone early in the day for the team, Kebler defeated Jakupcin, 6-1, 6-4. Along with Christine Milliken (Traverse City, Mich.), Kebler was also able to earn a win over Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel of Bowling Green in doubles play. The MSU pairing was able to hold off the late surge from the Falcon tandem, defeating BGSU 8-7 (7-5).
Picking up a win at No. 1 doubles were partners Manon Noe (Liancort, France) and Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.). Noe and Wilson were able to get out quickly against Jakupcin and Stefanie Menoff of Bowling Green and never looked back, defeating the Falcon tandem 8-3.
Both Noe and Wilson were also able to continue their doubles success as they hit the courts as individuals. Noe, at the No. 2 singles position, was able to defeat Kintzel, 6-4, 6-3, while Wilson, at the No. 4 singles slot, was able to defeat Stefanie Menoff, 6-2, 6-3. Also earning singles wins were Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia) and Lindsey Lonergan (Cincinnati, Ohio). At the No. 3 singles spot, Ivanova was able to help the Spartans in the win column as she defeated Babina, 6-2, 7-5. Lonergan was also able to help in the MSU sweep of Bowling Green as she defeated Libby Harrison, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5 singles position.
In the evening match against Cleveland State, the Spartans were able to once again gain the early doubles momentum in defeating all three Vikings doubles pairings. In the No. 1 doubles position, Wilson and Noe never looked back from their afternoon success as they defeated Catrine Bjerrejus and Charlotte Gibbons of Cleveland State, 8-1. In Kebler and Ivanova's first match with one another on the season, the Spartan tandem played seamlessly together as they defeated the Viking pairing of Melissa Holzinger and Jackie Tabb in the No. 2 spot, 8-0. Also making their debut this season together was Lonergan and Milliken who defeated the No. 3 doubles tandem of Molly Drake and Myra Pepino, 8-2.
In singles play, Kebler was able to defeat Gibbons in the No. 1 singles position, 6-0, 6-3. Also picking up her fourth win on the day was Noe, who defeated Bjerrehus at No. 2 singles. At the No. 3 singles spot, Ivanova was able to help add to the Spartan total, when she defeated Holzinger, 6-2, 6-2. Playing her first match on the day at No. 4 singles was Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa). Milosavljevic was able to hold off the surge from Tabb, defeating her 7-5, 6-2. Wilson was able to make quick work of Pepino at the No. 5 spot, as she defeated the Viking 6-1, 6-0. Helping to complete the Spartan sweep was Lonergan at No. 6 singles, who was able to defeat Drake 6-0, 6-2.
The Spartans return to action as they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., on Friday, Feb. 27 for a match against Western Michigan at 6 p.m.
