
Men's Tennis Defeats Illinois State and IUPUI

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team improved to 11-1 on the season after picking up both wins in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans defeated Illinois State, 6-1, and IUPUI, 7-0.
Michigan State had a solid start to the day, picking up the doubles point against Illinois State. Freshman Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) and sophomore John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) defeated Michael Hobson and Timon Reichelt, 8-5, at the No. 2 doubles position. Senior John Allare (Maineville, Ohio) and junior Jason Norville (Farmington, Mich.) improved to 9-0 on the season, picking up a win over Filip Moljevic and Skip Span, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot.
The momentum carried over into singles with the Spartans taking five of the possible six points. Senior Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.) posted a win over Timon Reichelt at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, while classmate Allare defeated Filip Molijevic, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Brooks picked up a win at No. 4 singles, and freshman Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) posted a win over Daniel Tobar, 6-0 in the first set and then by default after Tobar was injured at No. 5 singles. Stratton rounded out the singles wins with a 6-2, 6-2, at the six position.
MSU again picked up the doubles point to start the match against IUPUI, with all three doubles teams defeating their Jaguar opponents. Forger and Rasmussen posted a win over Dan Klingenberg and Bren Vasalakis at the No.1 position, while Brooks teamed with Stratton to pick up the win over Taylor Tunis and Greg Sosa, 8-3. At the No. 3 position, junior Brendan Kinkopf (Cleveland, Ohio) partnered with Hulewicz to overcome EJ DeChow and Jorge Yunes, 8-1.
Allare picked up his second-straight win of the day against Greg Sosa at the No. 1 singles position, defeating him 6-0, 6-2. Rasmussen defeated Dan Klingenberg, 6-1, 6-7, 10-7, at the No. 2 position. Norville posted an impressive win over Bren Vasalakis at the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-0, while Hulewicz defeated Taylor Tunis 7-6(4), 6-2 at No. 4. Sophomore Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) posted a 6-1, 6-1, win over Jorge Yunes, and Kinkopf defeated Jesus Diaz, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans travel to California where they will first face off against Santa Clara on March 11 at 3 p.m. in Santa Clara, Calif. They take on California, March 12 at Berkley with play beginning at 1:30 p.m., and then No. 13 Tulsa on March 13, with play starting at 12 p.m.
