EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team hosted the 2009 First Pitch Dinner on Sunday, Feb. 8, with a record crowd of nearly 400 in attendance. The fourth-annual event honored former Spartan and Major League Baseball great, Steve Garvey, who received the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Also in attendance was former Spartan star Mark Mulder, along with several other former players.
Garvey was an All-America selection in 1968 for the Spartans and went on to spectacular professional career that featured the 1974 NL MVP honor, three NLCS MVP awards, and 10 All-Star game appearances.
The event, held at the Spartan Club, featured autographs from the current Spartans, a silent auction, as well as speeches from director of athletics Mark Hollis and head coach Jake Boss Jr.
