CLEMSON, S.C. - The 22nd-ranked Clemson Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 first-inning lead and defeated the Michigan State baseball team, 15-2, on Tuesday (March 10) afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C.
The Tigers got to the Spartans early on, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first aided largely by a three-run home run off the bat of Wilson Boyd. RBI singles in the bottom of the second by Clemson's Mike Freeman and Ben Paulson boosted their lead to 6-0.
Tiger starter Justin Sarratt had a no-hitter working through 4.1 innings until Spartan catcher Eric Roof broke it up with a line shot into left-center field.
MSU got on the board in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to right center from Jeff Holm. It was Holm's first career homer and made the score 7-1.
Clemson tacked on five more runs off two hits and two wild pitches in the bottom of the seventh before Seth Williams cranked MSU's second solo home run of the day over the right-field fence to make the score 12-2.
In his first career start, Kurt Wunderlich (0-2) went 5.0 innings and surrendered seven runs off nine hits.
Sarratt improved to 2-0 for the Tigers, going six innings and allowing one run off three hits.
The Spartans (1-10) and Tigers (7-4) will meet again on Wednesday (March 11) in Greenville, S.C. at Fluor Stadium, the home of the Class A Greenville Drive. First pitch is schedule for 7 p.m.
