BERKLEY, Calif. - The Michigan State men's tennis team (12-2) fell at California, 6-1, Thursday afternoon. Freshman Ronnie Hulewicz recorded MSU's only win, improving to 12-1 in dual play.
California took an early lead after winning all three doubles matches to claim the point. The doubles tandem of John Allare and Jason Norville fell in a close match, 8-6, to seventh-ranked Geoff Chizever and Pedro Zerbini.
Hulewicz recorded his tenth straight singles win at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 5-7 (8), and senior John Allare took his match at No. 2 singles to a tiebreaker, but fell short to Eoin Heavey.
"We played competitive, but weren't able to finish the match," said head coach Gene Orlando. "We knew they were a good team going in, but fell behind after doubles play. We have another tough match tomorrow against No. 29 Tulsa, but we're looking to get back on the winning track."
MSU returns to action on Friday, March 13 with a match against Tulsa in California.
