ATHENS, Ga. - For the second straight day, play at the 37th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic has been cancelled due to rain. The golf tournament, one of the longest-standing intercollegiate competitions in women's athletics, will be contested as an 18-hole event on Sunday.
"Yesterday, we just had a lot of rain," UGA head coach Kelley Hester said. "Today, we're expecting rain and severe weather. In addition to two inches of rain, the forecast calls for thunderstorms, possible hail and strong winds.
"We made the decision to go ahead cancel today," Hester continued. "Considering how much rain we already have had on the golf course and that we're expecting two more inches today, we made the call early before the round started today. We thought the odds of the entire field getting in 18 holes today...well, the chances of that were probably zero."
Play is slated to begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
