EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team finished the first day of action at the Boilermaker Invitational in ninth place. Through 36 holes at the Kampen Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, the Spartans shot a 12-over par 588 (297-291).
Junior Jack Newman (75-70) and sophomore Payne Gniewek (71-74) paced MSU, sitting in a tie for 16th at one-over 145. Sophomore Graham Baillargeon (75-75) and junior Andrew Ladwig (76-74) are tied for 46th at six-over par 150. Freshman Phil Snow rounded out the Spartans in a tie for 86th at 14-over 158 (85-73).
Penn State leads the Boilermaker Invitational at seven-under par 569 (288-281), two strokes ahead of Big Ten rival Illinois. The Nittany Lions' Kevin Foley is currently the top individual at nine-under 135 (69-66).
Tomorrow's final round begins with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
