COLUMBUS, Ohio - Junior Laura Kueny took second place - just one shot off the lead - with a 2-over 218 (74-69-75) at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on Sunday. The Spartans finished the tournament, which was held at the par 72, 6,228-yard Scarlet Course on the campus of Ohio State, sixth overall with a team score of 920 (307-304-309).
Kueny narrowly missed winning her second career tournament, finishing one stroke back of Ohio State's In Hong Lim, who shot a 1-over 217 (68-74-75).
Starting on No. 5 due to a shotgun start, Kueny bogeyed her first hole of the day, but followed with seven pars and a birdie on her next eight holes to stand at even-par on her first nine.
Lim and Kueny were tied after their first nine holes on Sunday as Lim went 1-over through her first nine. However, on her final nine, Kueny bogeyed holes No. 13-15. She bounced back with pars on 17 and 18 and a birdie on hole No. 1. Kueny then bogeyed the par-4 second hole before finishing with two pars, carding a 75 on the day. Lim, who entered the day with a one-shot lead, only had two bogeys on her back nine to also finish with a round of 75.
The three-round total of 218 ties a season-best score for Kueny; she also shot a 218 at the Mary Fossum Invitational in September.
Lindsey Solberg shot a 78 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 26th with an overall score of 234 (79-77-78).
Aimee Neff and Michelle Bowles also placed in the top 40 with scores of 235 and 237, respectively. Neff tied for 33rd after shooting an 81 in the final round, while Bowles took 40th with a 79 on Sunday.
Holly Niederkohr tallied her best round of the tournament with a 77 on Sunday, finishing with a three-round total of 241 (80-84-77).
The No. 21 Michigan State women's golf team returns to action next weekend (April 24-26) for the Big Ten Championships held at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
