Men's Tennis Concludes Season With Loss To Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team fell to sixth-seed Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich., finishing the 2008-09 season. Freshman Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) picked up the lone win for the Green and White in a 4-1 loss.
The Hoosiers gained momentum early after obtaining the doubles point. Indiana's doubles tandem of Santiago Gruter and Jeremy Langer defeated the pairing of senior John Allare (Masonville, Ohio) and junior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.) at the No. 1 position and the No. 2 Indiana duo posted an 8-0 win to take an early lead.
In singles action, two matches went unfinished as Indiana had clinched the win. Both of the unfinished matches were looking up for MSU. At the No. 2 position, Allare and Gruter went into a third set after Gruter barely topped Allare 7-6(3). Allare completely dominated in the second set posting a 6-0 tally, forcing Gruter into a tie-breaker that was stopped with Allare leading, 2-0.
A very similar situation took place at No. 6 singles when Stephen Vogl came out with a win in the first set over sophomore John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.), 7-6(3). Stratton fought back topping Vogl, 6-2, and forcing another match into a tie-breaking third set. The match was put to a halt with Stratton leading, 1-0.
Hulewicz continued to impress after defeating Maxime Armengaud, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 position for his 20th win of the dual season. Will Kendall of Indiana posted a win over freshman Austin Brooks (Houston, Tex.), 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 5 singles position, clinching the match for the Hoosiers and advancing them to further play.
MSU ends the 2009 campaign with a 12-14 record.
