COLUMBUS, Ohio - Tony Bucciferro was named to the Big Ten Baseball All-Freshman Team, it was announced Tuesday (May 19) by the conference office. The Joliet, Ill. native, leads MSU in strikeouts this season with 59 and posts a dominant strikeout to walk ratio of 5.9-to-1.
"We are very proud of the year Tony has had," said MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. "He did a tremendous job first as a midweek starter and then as our No. 3 starter in the conference."
Bucciferro, who is currently 5-2 on the year, began the season coming out of the bullpen but quickly turned into a starter for the Green and White as he got is first start in just his third appearance on March 8 at Bethune-Cookman. He picked up his first win in his second-career start, vs. Eastern Michigan on March 18 where he struck out five in seven complete innings.
The righty won his first-career Big Ten start on April 26 at Iowa, where he went 7.1 innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out five in 14-5 MSU win. Twice this season he has tied a team-season high with nine strikeouts.
"Tony is very deserving of this honor and we look forward to his bright future with MSU," Boss added.
