EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's golf junior Laura Kueny was named an honorable mention selection to the 2008-09 Duramed NGCA Division I All-American Team on Friday night at the NGCA Division I Awards Banquet in Baltimore, Md. Kueny and freshman Lindsey Solberg were also chosen to the NGCA All-Central Region squad.
"We are thrilled for Laura, to be named an All American is a very special honor, and one that she is very deserving of," said Michigan State head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "She is making her mark in our program and with another year to go, the sky is the limit."
Kueny is the 10th MSU golfer to earn All-American honors and makes it two-straight seasons with a Spartan honored, as Sara Brown was also an honorable mention choice last season. She was one of three Big Ten golfers who were named All-Americans, joining Purdue's Maria Hernandez, who was a first team choice in addition to being named the PING NGCA Division I Player of the Year, and the Boilermakers' Maude Aimee Leblanc.
Kueny had one of the best statistical seasons in Michigan State history, as her 74.50 season scoring average ranks third all-time in program history. She posted six top-five and eight top-10 finishes in the team's 12 stroke play events this season, leading the team in eight of those outings. A First Team All-Big Ten selection, Kueny tied for fourth at the conference tournament, followed by a tie for seventh at the NCAA Central Regional and a tie for 48th at the NCAA Championship to conclude the season. Her career stroke average of 74.90 is currently the best in Michigan State history.
Solberg, who was also a named a Second Team All-Big Ten choice earlier this season, was second on the team with a 76.81 scoring average. She led the Spartans at both the NCAA Central Regional, where she finished sixth, and the NCAA Championship with a tie for 39th.
Michigan State ended the season this week with a tie for 13th at the NCAA Championship, the second best finish in program history.
