Spartans fall to Syracuse in Overtime, 2-1

Syracuse, N.Y. - Despite controlling the tempo for most of the game and having a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal, seventh-ranked Michigan State fell to eighth-ranked Syracuse, 2-1. The Orange scored off a penalty corner less than three minutes into overtime for the victory.

Michigan State jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Chantae Miller took the rebound off of a blocked Manouk Vernij shot and put it into the back of the net, making it 1-0 Spartans. Syracuse quickly responded when Amy Kee scored off a penalty corner to tie the game at 1. The Spartans had a chance to make it 2-1 just before halftime but Jantine Steinmetz's shot hit the post and stayed out of the net.

The Spartans and Orange played to a scoreless second half and went to overtime tied, 1-1. Less than three minutes into the extra frame the Orange were awarded a penalty corner and again took advantage when Kee scored her second goal of the game, making the final score 2-1 in favor of Syracuse.

The Spartans, who drop to 4-2 on the season, will travel to Virginia next weekend for matchups with No. 12 James Madison and No. 6 Virginia.
