The men's tennis team finished the first day of the Frank Beeman Invitational at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Friday, Sept. 18, beginning fall play.
"I thought everyone played pretty solid today, especially for being the first tournament of the year," said first-year assistant coach Matt Roberts. "After watching everyone, I think we need a little work in doubles for sure, but I expect the whole weekend to be solid. Hopefully, we get the job done and get a lot of wins."
The Spartans came out strong claiming wins in all of their singles matches. Three of four doubles teams also advanced to the second round, where two doubles tandems will meet in round three tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 19. Freshman Denis Bogatov (Gurnee, Ill.), senior Jason Norville (Farmington Hills, Mich.), sophomore Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) and junior John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) all advanced in both singles and doubles action.
Bogatov had a strong debut as he won his first match with the Green and White in a tie-braking set, defeating Javier Bernabe of Northern Illinois, 6-2, 7-6(3) in Flight A. In the same flight, senior Brendan Kinkopf (Cleveland, Ohio) and Stratton also picked up wins for the Spartans. Kinkopf outlasted opponent Patrick Troy of Detroit Mercy in a three-match set, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, while Stratton downed Mike Kathary of Youngstown State, 6-4, 6-2.
Norville posted a win over Bryant Dudzik of the University of Toledo, 6-3, 6-2, while teammate Brooks impressed with a victory over Chris Cheung of Detroit Mercy, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) defeated Nick Tolemei of Detroit Mercy, 6-2, 6-2.
Junior Clark Richardson (Leawood, Kan.) came out with a strong win over Chris Didio of Detroit Mercy, 6-1, 6-0, while freshmen Christian Roehmer forced Evan Neuman of Wright State into a tie-braking, three-match set where he came out on top, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
Doubles action saw plenty of wins for the MSU as well. Two Spartan teams advanced to further play in the tournament. The tandem of Bogatov and Norville first defeated Nick Camilleri and Landon Neuman of Wright State in a tough match, 9-7, and followed up with a win over Pat Hamning and Mike Kathary of Youngstown State in the second round with a similar result, 9-7.
Michigan State will continue play tomorrow, Sept. 19, at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts with singles action slated to begin at 9 a.m.
