EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country program will be opening its 2009 campaign at the Jeff Drenth Memorial hosted by Central Michigan University, on Friday at 4 p.m. Also competing in the non-scored event, besides the Chippewas and the Spartans, will be Alma College.
"This meet will really give us a chance to look at some of the young kids in action," said director of track & field and cross country Walt Drenth. "Especially for the new kids, it will allow them to understand what we are trying to do. More than anything else, this is really a teaching opportunity for us."
Competing Friday for the women will be Ashley Casavant, Megan Creutz, Tiffany Evans, Amanda Field, Jackie Gross, Diane Hamilton, Jennifer Hamilton, Allie Hock, Thereseann Zimmerman, Sloan Secord, Elizabeth Watson and Jennifer Yee.
The men's entries include Shaka Dukes, Brian Hankins, Stephen Humes, Mike Katseferas, Alex Russeau, Aaron Simoneau and Aaron Winter.
Last season, the women finished tied for 11th place at the NCAA Championships and third at the Big Ten Championships, while the men posted a sixth-place finish at the Big Tens.
The Jeff Drenth Memorial looks to serve as a tune up for MSU as it prepares for the Spartan Invitational on Friday, Sept. 18 at Forest Akers East, with races beginning at 1 p.m.
