
Spartans Finish Regular Season Strong at EMU Fall Classic

DEXTER, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country program concluded pre-championship races today (Oct. 23) with the EMU Fall Classic in Dexter, Mich. MSU saw two fifth-place finishes in the men's and women's 5k race as Elizabeth Watson turned in a time of 18:26.2, while Shaka Dukes finished in 15:37.3.
Finishing less than a second behind Watson in sixth place of the women's race was Rachel McFarlane with time of 18:26.8. Allie Hock was the third Spartan to cross the finish line when she turned in an 18:47.7 mark, good enough for 11th place. Veronica Wilson and Taylor McCurdy rounded out the top-five runners for the Green and White. Wilson recorded a time of 18:57.1, while McCurdy posted a time of 19:02.0
Thereseann Huprikar competed unattached at the event and clocked a fourth-place mark of 18:24.8. Kourtney Moody of Michigan finished tops in the race when she turned in a time of 18:14.4.
Sam Aklilu was the second MSU male to end the race when he crossed the finish line in 15:50.4 for 14th place. Travis Borchard and Joe Banyai were third and fourth for the Spartans with times of 16:00.8 and 16:13.4, respectively. Brandon Hoffman rounded out the top-five runners for the Green and White when turned in a 16:48.9 mark.
Competing unattached David Madrigal and Alex Wilson finished second and third in the men's 5k with times of 15:31.7 and 15:35.4, respectively. Grzegorz Kalinowski of host EMU was the top men's 5k runner when he finished in 15:28.5.
The Spartans open their championship season on Sunday, Oct. 31 when they travel to Madison, Wis. for the 2010 Big Ten Championships hosted by Wisconsin.
