The lone goal of the matchup came in only the fourth minute of competition when Spartan goalkeeper Jill Flietstra deflected a shot from Niki Read. Vanessa DiBernardo finished the play by redirecting the rebound into the bottom left corner of MSU's net. The goal was unassisted and DiBernardo earned her 11th score of the season on the play.
Flietstra stopped seven attempts by the Fighting Illini in the first half, but was replaced by Elizabeth Watza at halftime, and she played the remainder of the tilt. In her first outing of the season, Watza notched her first save with a sprawling dive to the right side that averted the ball with just her fingertips. The Spartan defense proved strong once again by only allowing one goal in 17 shots by Illinois.
Michigan State will see action again this Sunday (Oct. 31) when they host Iowa at DeMartin Stadium. The four Spartan seniors will be recognized prior to the 12:00 p.m. kickoff.
