EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State cross country senior Emily MacLeod (Loveland, Ohio) was named Big Ten Female Runner of the Week, as announced by the conference office today. MacLeod earns the honor after placing second at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 2 when she turned in a career-best time of 20:15.8, 2.4 seconds behind Charlotte Browning of Florida in first (20:13.4). This marks the third honor for MacLeod in her career, and second of the season. Overall, the Spartans placed third out of the 20 teams competing. The Spartans were the only team to place two runners in the top-10 overall on the women's side.
The Spartans were one of six teams ranked in the weekly U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll who competed in the race. The women entered the race ranked 20th in the weekly USTFCCCA poll. Ranked teams the Spartans finished ahead of included No. 7 Florida, No. 22 Michigan and No. 26 Wisconsin. No. 11 Syracuse and No. 29 North Carolina were the only teams MSU trailed as SU took first place with a team score of 89 points and UNC was second with 98 points.
As a result of MSU's impressive performance in Wisconsin, the Green and White moved up to 18th in this week's USTFCCCA poll. Also, the women are currently the top-ranked team in the Big Ten, as well as sitting atop the Great Lakes Region poll.
MacLeod and the Spartans return to action on Friday, Oct. 8 when they travel to the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. Action begins at 3:30 p.m.
