East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State wrapped up its fall training with an impressive sweep of all races in both the varsity and novice boats against Ohio State, Indiana, and Notre Dame on Sunday. This completes MSU's fall racing schedule, which provides the rowers in the program a starting point on which to train all winter in preparation for the spring championship season.
The four schools all brought three varsity boats, while the three Big Ten schools also brought novice boats. The programs all competed in a series of set pieces; at the end of the day, the Spartans had swept through their competition, securing wins in all three varsity and all three novice flights.
"I'm very happy with what I saw today," noted head coach Matt Weise, who has guided his varsity eight to three consecutive Big Ten championships and Conference team championships in two of the last three seasons. "The athletes really put a lot of energy into preparing for today, both on and off the water. As a team, I really feel like we took a good step forward, and put together a really good base to train on as we continue to build toward the spring. "
