Michigan State baseball head coach Jake Boss and his assistant Graham Sikes visited Cape Town, South Africa, earlier this month (Dec. 2-6) as part of an Athletes in Action (AIA) trip to the country.
Boss and Sikes led clinics with coaches and players, ages 8-18, teaching baseball basics.
Along with MSU Athletes in Action Director Phil Gillespie, they also spoke at underprivileged schools regarding team building and character development.
AIA is an interdenominational Christian fellowship for college athletes, and exists on campuses through the country as well as in many nations around the world.
"We had the experience of a lifetime in Cape Town, and hopefully we can make it an annual trip," said Boss. "The South African people were very open to what we had to share, both from a baseball and a spiritual perspective, and the trip proved to be very productive. We were able to conduct clinics with local youth and coaches, and meet with representatives from two prominent universities in Cape Town with the hopes of introducing Athletes in Action to their sports programs.
"South Africa, and Cape Town in particular, is a very scenic place with a great deal of history attached to it and it put everything that we been blessed with here in the United States in perspective. I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to take part in an Athletes in Action trip and look forward to returning in the future."
