EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated both Toledo and BGSU by the same score, 5-2, Saturday, Feb. 13, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, putting the Green and White at 4-4 on the season. Four Spartans went undefeated throughout the day; sophomore Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia), junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.), freshman Nicole Herzog (Manillia, Brazil) and senior Christine Milliken (Traverse City, Mich.) all picked up wins in both singles and doubles action.
"It was a very long day but it was great to get out and play some matches," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We picked up two good wins and hopefully from here, we can use this momentum in the matches we have coming up."
MSU started the day out strong in doubles action against Toledo picking up all three doubles contests. At the No. 1 position, freshman Michaela Silesova (Topolcany, Slavakia) teamed with Ivanova to defeat Wodzinski and Guirguis, 8-6. Freshman Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia) and Wilson joined to outlast Frey and Zoubareva, 8-7(3), and the tandem of Herzog and Milliken defeated Reynolds and Canajal at the No. 3 spot, 8-6.
Momentum from doubles action carried into singles as the Spartans won four of the six singles matches. Herzog defeated Guiguis at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, Wilson outlasted Zoubareva, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot, while Ivanova dominated Reynolds at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 6-0, and at the No. 6 spot, Milliken defeated Washington with an impressive, 6-0, 6-3, mark.
MSU also picked up all three doubles matches against Bowling Green later in the afternoon. Silesova and Ivanova topped Chiricosta and Eccleston, 8-7(4), at the No. 1 positon, Wilson teamed with Barton to defeat Babina and Johnson, 8-3, at the No. 2 spot and with identical results, Herzog and Milliken picked up the win over Grubb and Kintzel at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
As with the match against Toledo, the Spartans again posted wins in four of the six singles matches. Herzog defeated Babina at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 6-4, Milliken outlasted Grubb at the No. 4 spot, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, Wilson also went into a three-set match at the No. 5 position defeating Eccleston, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, and Ivanova topped Easdale in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot.
MSU next hosts Evansville on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility at 10 a.m., when former Spartan Christine Bader brings her Purple Aces to town.
