CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Michigan State rowing team got its spring schedule underway on Saturday in Charlottesville, taking part in a scrimmage with the team from the University of Virginia. The scrimmage consisted of five small timed races in six events featuring the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four, novice eight and novice four.
"Racing against a good team early in the spring shows us where we are as a team," said Spartan head coach Matt Weise. "This race showed us where some of our holes are and where we need to improve and grow."
Leading the way for the Spartans was their varsity eight boat which captured three of their five races.
"I thought the varsity eight performed well for it being the beginning of March," Weise said. "There are still a lot of things that they can improve upon but I was pretty happy with their overall performance."
The remaining Spartan boats raced strong but failed to pick up any victories over the Cavaliers boats who finished second in last year's NCAA regatta.
"Our other boats showed some good speeds at times but their consistency and intensity needs to pick up," Weise said. "However, good teams respond and I feel that this is a good team."
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 27th when they welcome rivals Notre Dame and Michigan to East Lansing for the regular season opener.
