EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State first varsity eight boat claimed this week's Big Ten Boat of the Week honor after defeating Michigan and Notre Dame last weekend.
The Spartan boat of Michelle Mussett, Shannon Dunn, Laura Cowal, Emily Regan, Michelle Neuder, Kellie Lapointe, Stephanie Bochenek, Victoria Woodard and coxswain Amanda McGeachie got out to a quick start gaining a five seat lead on UM and Notre Dame 500m into the race. By the 1000m mark the margin had grown to eight seats and it eventually progressed into open water at around 1500m. The Spartans hung onto their open water lead and finished the race in an impressive time of 6:29.6. The Spartans bested the ninth-ranked Wolverines by four seats of open water (4.1 seconds) and defeated the Irish by four boat lengths of open water (17.3 seconds).
The V8 becomes the first MSU boat to take home Big Ten Weekly Honors since the first varsity eight took home Big Ten Boat of the Week honors on April 29, 2009.
The varsity eight and the rest of the Spartan rowers return to action next week when they head to Ithaca, N.Y. for races with Cornell, Yale, Syracuse, Buffalo and Gonzaga.
