EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team fell, 6-1, to Ohio State at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Saturday, April 10, leaving the Spartans at 6-13 overall.
Althought they lost, Michigan State did not give up the doubles point without a fight. The No. 1 doubles tandem of freshman Nicole Herzog (Manilia, Brazil) and junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) defeated Kelsey Haviland and Cami Hubbs, 8-6, for a promising start. Freshman Michael Silesova (Topolcany, Slavakia) and sophomore Elena Ivanova (Moscoa, Russia) battled at the No. 2 spot, but fell by the close margin of 8-6 to Paloma Escobedo and Christina Keesey. Junior Manon Noe (Liancourt, France) and senior Christine Milliken (Traverse City, Mich.) also fell by a slight margin to Gabby Steele and Fidan Manashirova, 9-7, at No. 3 doubles.
Ivanova was the only Spartan to earn a win in singles action after picking up a dominating victory over Manashirova, 6-3, 6-3. Herzog also impressed at No. 2 singles, forcing Escobedo into a three-set match after winning the first set, but ultimately fell, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
MSU next takes on Penn State at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 11 on the campus of MSU. Weather permitting, the Spartans will host the match at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
