EAST LANSING, Mich. - For the second time this season, the Michigan State first varsity eight boat has been named the Big Ten Boat of the Week. This past weekend, the Spartan V8 swept a pair of Big Ten opponents at the Big Ten Double Dual at Lake Lemon.
The Spartan boat of Michelle Mussett, Shannon Dunn, Laura Cowal, Emily Regan, Michelle Neuder, Kellie Lapointe, Stephanie Bochenek, Victoria Woodard, and coxswain Amanda McGeachie were dominant in their two races over the weekend. In the morning session against host Indiana the V8 topped the Hoosier crew by 24.2 seconds in a time of 6:51. In the afternoon session, MSU faced off with No. 13 Ohio State in a race which would decide the outcome of the MSU-OSU dual. The Spartans got out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 12.9 second victory in a time of 6:39.3, the fastest time for any boat competing at the Big Ten Double Dual. The victory by the varsity eight gave the Spartans 18 crucial points which led to the Green and White's 36-31 victory over the Buckeyes.
With this week's honor, the Spartan varsity eight becomes the first boat in the Big Ten to claim multiple Boat of the Week honors this season. The Spartan V8 also took home the honor for the week of March 30th.
The varsity eight and the rest of the Spartan crew return to action this weekend when they travel to Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio for races with No. 8 USC and Big Ten rivals No. 13 Ohio State and No. 10 Michigan.
