East Lansing, Mich. - Emily Regan (Williamsville, NY) has been named a 2010 Pocock All-American, as selected by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Regan's selection highlights the five CRCA All-Region selections, and MSU also placed five on the CRCA Scholar-Athlete list.
Regan is the seventh Spartan to earn First Team All-America honors. The Big Ten Athlete of the Year is MSU's first First Team All-America since Christen Brown in 2006. Regan claimed First Team All-Region honors for the second consecutive season. Regan, a former walk-on, rowed three seasons in MSU's varsity boat, capturing three Big Ten gold medals in the V8.
Earning First-Team All-Region honors were varsity eight members Regan, Michelle Mussett (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), Laura Cowal (Thorold, Ontario); and coxswain Amanda McGeachie (Sidney, British Columbia). Senior Victoria Woodard (Howell, Mich.) was a second team All-Region pick.
The CRCA Scholar-Athletes are determined by the athletes maintaining a 3.5 GPA or above, participating in an NCAA boat (V8, 2V, or V4) for at least 75% of the team's races that season, and holds sophomore academic standing or above. MSU's selections were sophomore Breanne Walkowiak (Midland, Mich.; 4.0, Kinesiology); juniors Stephanie Bochenek (Hamilton, Ontario; 3.598, Accounting) and Shannon Dunn (Pittsburgh, Penn.; 3.815, IDS Health Studies); and seniors Megan Kursik (Fenton, Mich.; 3.895, Social Relations) and Woodard (3.80, Mathematics).
The Spartans finished ninth at the recent NCAA Championship regatta, with its varsity eight winning the petite final. The Spartans won their third consecutive varsity eight gold medal at the Big Ten Championships, and the team finished second in both the Big Ten and Central Region. MSU will return six athletes from its varsity eight in 2010.
