Spartans Win Fourth-Straight Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team claimed the 43rd Fossum Invitational on Sunday at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Spartans finished up the second round with a 9-over par 297 to finish the weather-shortened event with a 15-over par 591 (294-297). Junior Chris Mory and sophomore James Ross finished the tournament tied at 2-over 146, but Ross beat Mory with a par on the 10th hole in a playoff for the individual title.
MSU has now won the last four Fossum Invitationals and has won 11 all-time. It was Ross' first collegiate victory.
Dayton finished second with a 29-over par 605 (305-300), while James Madison was third at 32-over par 608 (309-299).
Playing as an individual, sophomore Matthew Moseley tied for third, one shot off the leaders at 3-over par 148 (76-72). Three Spartans - junior Dave Ellis (75-75), and freshmen Gareth Blease (75-75) and Carson Castellani (73-77) - tied for ninth at 6-over par 150.
Redshirt senior Derrick Williams tied for 16th at 7-over par 151 (76-75). Junior Dan Ellis and freshman Conor O'Neil tied for 21st at 8-over par 152. Sophomore Will Morris tied for 31st with a 10-over 154 (80-74).
The Spartans return to action on Sept. 20-21 for the Adams Cup of Newport in Newport, R.I.
