The 2010-11 season got underway on Sunday for the Michigan State rowing team, which traveled to Ann Arbor to race against Michigan in a series of scrimmage events. The Spartans fared well both in the head race and set pieces, giving head coach Matt Weise a good look at the result of their first month of training.
"Today was a good starting point for us," said Weise. The athletes did a good job of making technical adjustments and maintaining focus throughout the day. This was just an early training benchmark - there's a lot of training left before we start our season in the spring."
The day's first race was a 2.5-mile time trial, which was structured as a head race. A head race varies from what the teams see in season, as the boats begin their race in intervals, with the boats racing against the clock instead of head-to-head. Two of the three Spartan entries crossed the line first, as the MSU "A" boat was clocked at 11:15, and the MSU "B:" entry was two seconds off that pace (11:17). Michigan's A and B entries were clocked at 11:27 and 11:28, respectively. MSU's "C" boat was in at 11:39, and Michigan's "C" and "D" boats at 11:58 and 12:20 for the course.
Following the head race, the boats had a series of six-minute pieces, all of which were won by MSU's "A" and "B" entries by open water. I
