East Lansing, Mich. - Lisa Weise, the wife of MSU rowing coach Matt Weise and a Spartan rower from the program's club days, won the Masters Single event at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. on Sunday.
One of the most well-known and prestigious head races in the rowing community, rowers from around the world converge on Boston each October chasing Head of the Charles glory. It is a challenging 3.2-mile course, and over the course of two days, the regatta - a staple since 1965 - brings more than 8,000 athletes from around the world compete in 55 different race events. The Regatta grew to a two-day event in 1997 and now attracts up to 300,000 spectators during the October weekend. Weise has twice won this event, and navigated the course in a time of 21:04.94, five seconds better than her closest competition. She was one of 18 competitiors in the event.
