EAST LANSING, Mich. - Branden Dawson scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in his first action for Michigan State as the new-look Spartans beat Ferris State 85-58 in an exhibition opener Sunday.
Dawson, a freshman wing from Gary, Ind., had eight points, three rebounds and a steal in the first 6:13, and his teammates took it from there. Slimmed-down center Derrick Nix had 15 points. Keith Appling added 12 points in his conversion to point guard. And forward Draymond Green had 11 points, six rebounds and eight assists.
Donald Sutherlin and Jerrell Sanders led the Bulldogs with 14 points.
Michigan State is back in action Friday when Hillsdale visits. The Spartans open the regular season against North Carolina in the Quicken Loans Carrier Classic off the coast of San Diego on Nov. 11, then face Duke in the Champions Classic in New York on Nov. 15.
