Cross Country Closes Out Strong Michigan Intercollegiate Championships

For the women, they quickly solidified why they were ranked 15th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association weekly poll, as they took home the team crown by 27 points. The Spartans posted a team score of 48 points, paced by a fourth-place finish by Olivia Sydow. Sydow clocked in at 18:29.13 to lead the Green and White.
Devan John followed Sydow in fifth place with her time of 18:44.87. Meggan Freeland and Veronica Wilson were the third and fourth Spartans to cross the finish, respectively. Freeland placed seventh with an 18:53.07 mark, while Wilson placed 14th in 19:07.60. Abbey Kelto rounded out the Spartan scorers, as she crossed the finish line in 19:16.23 for 18th place, narrowly edging Liana Eckert's 19th-place time of 19:16.74.
The men saw a majority of the roster take the week off, however four individuals were in action this weekend. Leading the Green and White at Hillsdale College was Shaka Dukes. Dukes placed third overall, clocking in a time of 26:22.17 for third place.
Brian Hankins joined Dukes with a top-15 finish, as he posted a time of 26:51.95 for 15th overall. Travis Borchard and Matt McSween rounded out the Spartan runners in 48th and 75th, respectively. Borchard clocked a 27:44.93, while McSween finished in 28:20.38.
The Spartans will travel to Madison, Wis., on Friday, Oct. 14 for Wisconsin adidas Invitational hosted by Wisconsin. Racing begins at 2 p.m. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
