Ross Tied for Eighth at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team completed its first stroke play tournament of the spring on Sunday, placing sixth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, held at Pinehurst No. 6. The Spartans shot a final round 17-over par 301 to end the three-day tournament at 39-over par 891 (293-297-301).
Sophomore James Ross posted his second top-10 finish on the year and fourth of his career, tying for eighth at 4-over par 217 (74-72-71). Ross, who shot a team low even par 71 today, had nine birdies this week and took advantage of the par-5s, going 3-under for the tournament.
Junior Chris Mory was second for the Spartans, tying for 16th at 8-over par 221 (76-70-75). Mory was fourth among all golfers with 39 pars. Freshman Gareth Blease tied for 34th overall at 12-over 225, shooting 4-over 75s each day. Blease had eight birdies and was tied for fourth in the field, going 5-under on the par-5s.
Junior Dan Ellis tied for 50th at 18-over 231 (71-80-80) and sophomore Matthew Moseley was tied for 66th at 22-over 235 (73-82-80).
Two MSU golfers played as individuals, with freshman Conor O'Neil tying for 34th at 12-over 225 (76-74-75) and junior Dave Ellis tied for 62nd at 21-over 234 (76-77-81). Ellis had nine birdies in his three rounds, while O'Neil had eight.
UNC-Wilmington held on to win the team title, shooting a three round total of 21-over par 873 (301-284-288) to top Virginia tech by six shots. UNC-Wilmington's Josh Brock and VCU's Matt Ball Jr. tied for the individual crown with 1-under par 212s.
The Spartans return to the course on March 25-27 for the Spring Break Championship in Delray Beach, Fla.
