
Women's Tennis Blanks Dayton and Ball State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 52 Michigan State women's tennis team recorded two wins at home to improve to 11- 3 on the year. The Spartans blanked Dayton 7-0 in the first match of the day. Following their impressive win over the Flyers, MSU defeated Ball State by a score of 7-0.
"It was a good confidence booster after a tough week of practice," said head coach Simone Jardim."We have been building up and trying to get ready for Big Ten play next week. It's good to get out there and get some wins for everyone. Especially because of the fact that we are starting Big Ten play next weekend, we really need everyone to go out and be ready to play and compete hard. We did today and that's important."
Against Dayton, the Spartans swept every doubles match to capture the doubles point. The No. 31 tandem of sophomore Amy Barton and freshman Marina Bohrer downed Claire Dreyer and Maureen Stevens, 8-3. Senior Whitney Wilson and sophomore Nicole Herzog combined to drop Lana Grote and Loni Dickerhoof, 8-1. The freshmen pair of Katarina Lingl and Jennifer Yen tallied an 8-3 victory over Kelly O'Connel and Clair McNulty.
Barton also captured the No. 1 singles victory when she topped Dreyer, 6-1, 3-6, 11-9. Sophomore Valentina Rusakova edged Dickerhoff, 6-3, 7-6 (2), at the No. 2 spot. Bohrer routed Grot, 6-0, 6-2. In an impressive match, Wilson shutout Stevens, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Michalea Silesova won her singles match again Erin Filbrant, 6-1, 6-2. Herzog tallied a 6-3, 6-4 victory over McNulty.
Against Ball State, Barton and Bohrer recorded their second doubles win of the day over Kylee Johnson and Kristel Sanders, 8-1. Silesova and Rusakova combined to top Dena Boulieris and Georgina Thornson, 8-4. Lingl and Yen fell in the Spartans' only loss of the day to Sarah Hebble and Lauren Pickrel, 8-6.
At the No. 1 singles position, Rusakova defeated Thomson, 6-1, 6-4. Bohrer also notched a victory over Sanders, 6-1, 6-0. Wilson downed Hebble, 6-3, 6-2, and Silesova topped Boulieris, 6-4, 6-1. Herzog tallied a win against Johnson, 6-2, 6-3. Prevailing by a score of 6-1, 6-0, sophomore Dana Guentert won her match of the day.
The Spartans host two Big Ten teams next weekend. MSU welcomes Purdue on Saturday, March 26th at 11 a.m., and then face off against Indiana at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 27th. Both matches will be played at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
