EAST LANSING, Mich. - Shawn Hindy was named as an assistant coach for the Michigan State field team today (March 22) by head coach Helen Knull. Hindy joins the Spartans after serving as both the Athletic/Activities Director and head field hockey coach for Lehighton Area High School in Lehighton, PA.
"The Spartan Field Hockey program is looking forward to Shawn joining the coaching staff," said Knull. "I believe that his experiences as a player and coach will bring a different dimension to the program, and will complete what I believe to be a well rounded staff. I believe that Shawn's personality and coaching style will only complement the current staff and I am looking forward to working with him in the years to come."
Hindy coached Lehighton to a State Championship title in 2009, which was the first State Championship of any sport in the history of the school. He has won four district championships, four league championships and advanced to the state playoffs all five years as a head coach. Hindy has compiled a 110-12-1 record in his coaching tenure, including a perfect 26-0 in 2009. In four years, the coach sent 25 players to play NCAA field hockey around the nation. From 2007-2010, Hindy was the head coach of the United States Women's Indoor National Field Hockey Team. In November of 2008, he led his squad to a Silver Medal at the Pan-American Cup Indoor Tournament in Argentina. Hindy also has experience at the collegiate level, when he served as an assistant field hockey coach at Radford University in Virginia from 2004-2006. While at Radford, Hindy worked towards receiving his MBA.
Hindy played for the United States Men's National Field Hockey Team from 1995-2007. He served as captain from 2001-04 and has played in more than 60 international matches for the United States. Since 2002, he has been a member of the United State's Men's National Indoor Field Hockey Team and recently returned from playing in the Indoor World Cup in Poznan, Poland.
"I am extremely thrilled about becoming part of the Michigan State Field Hockey program," said Hindy. "Coach Knull and Coach Maloney are great coaches, and I look forward to adding my experience and skills to the team. The student-athletes at Michigan State are some of the best in the country, and my goal is for field hockey to continue their success with another Big Ten Championship and the ultimate goal of a National Championship."
Hindy has also served as the CEO of First Class Field Hockey, which organizes high school-aged athletes into teams to compete in indoor and outdoor tournaments and prepare them to play at a higher level.
