Spartan Varsity Eight Repeats as Boat of the Week

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State first varsity eight boat claimed Boat of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after going 2-0 over the weekend at the Big Ten Double Duals on Lake Ovid in Sleepy Hollow State Park in Laingsburg, Mich.
The Spartans, who hosted Minnesota and Wisconsin on Saturday, defeated the Gophers but were edged by the defending Big Ten champion Badgers in the morning session. The varsity eight, (coxswain Amanda McGeachie, Laura Cowal, Kellie LaPointe, Michelle Neuder, BreeAnn Breton, Michelle Sosa, Alex Maibusch, Stephanie Bochenek, and Nikki Bade) swept through both races by open-water margins.
In its race against Wisconsin, the boat topped the Badgers in a time of 6:37.27, finishing in open water and by a margin of 6.23 seconds. Against Minnesota in the second session, the Spartan boat recorded a time of 6:34.12, marking the fastest time of any boat last weekend.
The Spartans will have their hands full this weekend when they travel to Virginia to square off with the hosts and defending National Champion Cavaliers, along with Texas and USC.
