Women's Tennis Drops Match to Illinois, 6-1

URBANA, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team (12-10, 1-8 Big Ten) failed to win its last conference match on the road when it fell to Illinois, 6-1, on Sunday, April 17 in Champaign, Ill.. Sophomore Amy Barton was the lone Spartan to record a point today when she tallied a victory at No. 1 singles.
Barton downed Amy Allin, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 1 position. The rest of the Spartans suffered defeats, with freshman Valentina Rusakova falling to No. 110 Rachael White, 7-5, 4-6, 3-0 retired. Allison Falkin dropped freshman Marina Bohrer, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Olga Chernova lost her match to No. 125 Breanna Smutko, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). At the No. 6 position, sophomore Nicole Herzog fell to Leigh Finnegan, 6-1, 6-1. Annie McCarthy defeated sophomore Dana Guentert, 6-2, 6-3.
The Spartans failed to win the doubles point against Illinois, but senior Whitney Wilson and Herzog partnered to defeat Smutko and McCarthy, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. In a battle of two ranked partners, No. 25 White and Falkin prevailed over No. 27 Barton and Bohrer, 8-3. In the No. 3 position, Chernova and freshman Katarina Lingl lost to Allin and Finnegan, 8-2.
The Spartans return home for their last home conference match of the season when they host Northwestern on Sunday, April 24th at 11 a.m. MSU will recognize its lone senior, Wilson, at the match in honor of Senior Day.
