Men's Golf Finishes Seventh at Illini Spring Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team placed seventh at the weather-shortened Illini Spring Classic on Sunday at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, Ill. The Spartans shot a final round 13-over par 301 to finish the 36-hole event at 28-over par 604 (303-301).
Akron held on to win the tournament with a 7-over par 583 (294-289), topping the host Fighting Illini by 10 shots. A precursor for the upcoming Big Ten Championship, 10 Big Ten schools were in the field.
Coming off a career-best 71 in the first round, freshman Gareth Blease shot a final round 6-over par 78 to finish in a tie for 18th at 5-over 149. It was Blease's second top-20 finish of the season. Blease led the field by playing the par-5s at 4-under par and was tops on the team and third overall with eight birdies.
Junior Chris Mory shot the low score of the day for the Spartans with a 1-over par 73, to finish one shot behind Blease at 6-over par 150 and tie for 24th. Mory had a tournament-best 27 pars this weekend.
Junior Dan Ellis matched his opening round of 4-over 76 today to tie for 31st at 8-over 152. Ellis was second on the team with seven birdies. Sophomore Matthew Moseley moved up the leaderboard on Sunday with a 2-over par 74 to tie for 38th at 9-over par 153 (79-74). Junior Dave Ellis rounded out the competitive five for MSU in a tie for 61st at 15-over par 159 (79-80).
Competing as an individual, junior Jimmy Dewling tied for 24th at 6-over par 150 (78-72), after shooting an even par 72 Sunday. It was Dewling best finish this season. He eagled the par-4, 348-yard sixth hole on Sunday, becoming the second Spartan to do so this weekend, joining Dan Ellis who did so yesterday.
The Spartans return to action on April 28-May 1 for the Big Ten Championship hosted by Purdue.
