East Lansing, Mich. - The seventh-ranked Michigan State rowers head to Columbus for Saturday racing against three other ranked teams in their final dual races of the season. The Spartans will line up with No. 11 Ohio State, No. 15 Michigan, and No. 17 Washington State.
The Spartans are coming off a busy race weekend last week in Virginia, where they endured three days of racing and some tough conditions. Originally, the race schedule called for Saturday morning and afternoon duals, but scheduling concessions were made when weather forecasting came into play. As a result, MSU flew to Virginia on Friday and took on the second-ranked Cavaliers on Friday evening instead of Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon's races against No. 3 USC and No. 14 Clemson were postponed until a 6 p.m. start, and the Sunday races against No. 18 Texas went off as scheduled.
MSU's highlight last weekend was the performance of its second varsity eight, which knocked off No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 USC, and No. 18 Texas to keep Big Ten Boat of the Week honors in East Lansing for a third straight week. The previous two weekly awards were won by MSU's varsity eight, for their performances at the Dale England Cup and against Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The Spartans, at No. 7, are the highest-ranked Big Ten and Midwestern team in the CRCA rankings. The top six boats are all from the east (No. 1 Princeton, No. 5 Virginia, No. 6 Brown) and the west (No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 USC, No. 4 UCLA) coasts.
The Spartans will race Saturday morning against the host Buckeyes, and against Michigan in the second varsity four and second novice eight boats. The Spartans will line up against Washington State in the afternoon session, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Spartan second novice eight and second varsity four will race in the afternoon sessions against the conference rival Buckeyes and Wolverines as well.
Saturday serves as MSU's final dual races of the season. The Spartans will break for exams and train for the Big Ten Championships, which will be held Sunday, May 15 in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year is a new format and date for the Big Ten Championships. In the past, Big Tens were held the first weekend in May, the teams competed in the South/Central Sprints in Mid-May, and then qualifiers two weeks after that at the NCAA Championship regatta, held annually on Memorial Day weekend. The Big Ten coaches voted instead to hold the Big Ten Championships later, as to allow the teams to train for peak performances both at Big Tens and the NCAA Championships. MSU has won two of the last three Big Ten titles, and the varsity eight boat is the three-time defending Big Ten champions.
