EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State Athletics Director Mark Hollis was recently elected Chairperson of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet. Hollis is just the second chair of the Amateurism Cabinet, as he replaces Mike Rogers (Faculty Rep., Baylor), who had served as chair since the inception of the cabinet in 2008. A member of the amateurism cabinet since 2008, Hollis also will continue to serve the NCAA on the Men's Basketball Issues Committee, a committee on which he's served since 2010.
Hollis has served as athletics director at MSU since 2008, guiding the Spartans through a successful stretch. Most recently, Michigan State won Big Ten Championships in five sports in 2010-11, including football, women's basketball, baseball, women's golf and women's cross country.
The Amateurism Cabinet along with the Academics Cabinet, and the Administration Cabinet have replaced the former Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet. This cabinet is responsible for all pre- and post-enrollment amateurism issues, including oversight of issues pertaining to the NCAA Eligibility Center, student-athlete likeness issues, and the relationship between college and professional athletes.
"I'm honored representing Michigan State University, the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA on issues that are important to the future of intercollegiate athletics," said Hollis. "It is important that we, as member institutions, understand the role that intercollegiate athletics play in higher education. As the Amateurism Cabinet continues to address challenging issues, we will build upon the leadership that Mike Rogers and others have paved for our student-athletes and institutions. Like Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and MSU President Lou Anna Simon have shown with their actions and innovations, taking an active leadership role in the shaping the future of intercollegiate athletics is a responsibility we all share."
The Amateurism Cabinet reports to the Division I Leadership Council on policy issues and the Division I Legislative Council on legislative issues. The cabinet is comprised of 20 members.
