DAHLONEGA, Ga. - A pair of back nine surges on Tuesday afternoon have Caroline Powers and Lindsey Solberg of Michigan State and Heather Lott and Liz Breed of Kentucky atop the leaderboard on the opening day at the second annual Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship at Achasta Golf Course.
During the opening round alternate shot format, the Spartan duo of Powers and Solberg tallied four birdies on the back nine to vault to a tie for first place with Kentucky's Lott and Breed who carded a 4-under-par 68 to force a deadlock and a tie for the low round of the day.
Virginia's Elizabeth Brightwell and Portland Rosen found themselves in trouble on their final hole of the day before settling for a double bogey finishing a shot off the pace with a three-under-par 69.
Mississippi's Haley Sanders and Katherine Fowler finished the day with a two-under-par 70, while Kristin Coleman and Jennifer Coleman from Colorado rounded out the players under par with a one-under-par 71 to hold sole possession of fifth place.
Christine Meier and Lindsey McPherson are also competing in the tournament for MSU and are tied for seventh after a first-round score of 73.
All 55 teams return to action on Wednesday morning for the second day of the Hooters Collegiate Team Championship with tee times set to begin at 8 a.m. playing in a best ball format. The event concludes Thursday with the third and final round, which is the aggregate score of the two players.
