EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 13 Michigan State field hockey team (0-2) fell in its second match of the season to No. 16 Louisville, 2-1. Redshirt junior Chelsy Coil scored to give the Spartans their only tally of the game.
"It's disappointing to lose by one goal," commented head coach Helen Knull. "We need to get more tactical and work on our corners in a close game like this. It's only the beginning of the season though, and we have a long way to go and put our changes into action."
The Cardinals scored the only goal of the first period at 12:29 off of a pnalty corner. Domini Pasqualichio knocked in a goal off of a play from Hayley Turner and Elizabeth Vance.
Neither team was able to score after the intermission until roughly seven minutes into the second half. Coil, who scored MSU's first goal of the season against California yesterday, picked up the ball off of Abby Barker's shot, and deposited past goal tender Erin Conrad to tie up the game.
A little bit more than a minute later, Hayley Jurich knocked in a shot from the right side of the cage to give Louisville the eventual game-winner. The Cardinals and Spartans were even in shots, 8-8. Both Conrad and redshirt sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy each had six saves. Louisville held the edge in corners, taking four to MSU's one.
Next up for the Spartans is a trip to Boston. They face Boston University on the campus of Boston College at 11 a.m. on Sept. 4th. On Sept. 5th, MSU will challenge Northeastern at 2 p.m.
