EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team finished day one of the Frank Beeman Invitational at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Friday, Sept 16., with signs of a promising season and tournament as the Spartans advanced four duo's to the semifinals in double play action and won nine contests in the individual brackets.
Representing the A Flight Doubles for the Spartans, junior Denis Bogatov and Sophomore Aaron Pfister defeated the Dayton Flyers' Hanley and Maylon, 8-2 to advance to the semifinal round. Senior Aaron Brooks and freshman Gijs Linders outplayed Detroit Mercy's Alex Latosinsky and Mike Basha in an 8-4 decision to play in the opposite semifinal match as well.
Senior Ronnie Hulewicz and junior Will Davis defeated Detroit's Joshi and Tolomei, 8-4, while junior Christian Roehmer and sophomore Ryan Richmond topped Dayton's Koscielski and Bernier, 8-4, to round out the Spartan victories in the B Flight Doubles.
The green and white's impressive play crossed over to the singles brackets as the team only dropped two out of their eleven match ups for the day. In the Spartan Flight junior Christian Roehmer topped Duquesne's Rubin, 6-4, 7-6 (4) and Davis went, 6-2, 6-3 over IUPUI's Shafer.
Freshman Harry Judan and Doug Zade made their debuts in the green and white, both picking up victories in the State Flight with Judan's, 4-6, 6-0 (10-7) over Bradley from IUPUI and Zade dominating IPFW's Saltys, 6-2, 6-2.
In the Green Flight Bogatov, Brooks and Pfister all picked up wins and veteran Hulewicz and newcomer Linders rounded out the list of victories for the Spartans in the White Flight.
The Spartans continue second round action in both doubles and singles play on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
