EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan State Track & Field team has earned its second Big Ten honor of the season.
Senior Becca Buchholtz has been named Co-Field Athlete of the Week for her school record high jump of 6-0 (1.83m) at the Notre Dame Invitational. She shares the honor with Purdue's Leah Eber. The jump, which currently ranks her second in the nation at that event, tops Buchholtz's previous record of 5-11 ½ (1.82) which she accomplished at last year's Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
In 2011, Buchholtz was a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Honoree, a NCAA East Preliminary Round Qualifier, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and an Academic All-Big Ten selection for the Spartans.
Last week, Tori Franklin earned Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week for her performance in the triple jump at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open.
Buchholtz's performance was one of many highlights for the Spartans who captured 16 event wins at Notre Dame.
Performances of note:
- Jay Gillespie - 1st in the weight throw 68-9 1/4 (20.96m). His weight throw ranks him 4th in the nation.
- Lonnie Pugh - 2nd in the weight throw 66-1 1/2 (20.15m). His weight throw ranks him 10th in the nation.
- Zack Hill - 2nd in the shot put at 61-7 (18.77m). Hill's effort tops last season's shot put best of 60-11 1/4 and ranks him 9th in the nation in the event.
- Beth Rohl - 7th in the nation in after winning the weight throw with an effort of 66-10 3/4 (20.39m).
The Spartans travel this Friday and Saturday to the Indiana Invitational.
