EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Adreian Payne scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, giving him a double-double as Michigan State defeated St. Cloud State, 62-49, in its final exhibition game on Friday night at Breslin Center.
Four Spartans scored in double figures, led by senior Derrick Nix with 14. Junior Keith Appling scored 13 points and had the team high of four assists. Freshman guard Gary Harris finished with 11 points in the win. Sophomore Branden Dawson and freshman Denzel Valentine both notched two steals for the Green and White.
After a tight beginning to the game, MSU went on a 9-0 run towards the end of the first half. After the run, the Spartans didn't look back maintaining a lead of at least seven points the rest of the way.
Leading St. Cloud State was Connor Niehaus with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Theo Rothstein added 11 rebounds.
Michigan State begins its regular season facing Connecticut in the Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, on Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. ET. The ground-breaking game will air on ESPN.
