WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In its last tournament before the Big Ten Championships, the Michigan State men's golf team finished eighth this weekend at the Boilermaker Invitational, held at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Kampen Course. The Spartans shot 17-over par 305 today to finish the tournament at 44-over par 908 (306-297-305).
"The fundamentals of putting a round together really hurt us today," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "We are executing a lot of great shots but are tripping ourselves up with some of the routine plays within a round. Bogies on par fives, poor lay-ups, poor decision making from trouble spots, 3-putts, big numbers - all of these things are avoidable mistakes that we are making too frequently. If we can clean these up and keep striking the ball well, we can really put some nice rounds together next week."
Junior Dan Ellis was the top Spartan this weekend, tying for 23rd at 9-over par 225 (77-74-74). Classmate Matthew Moseley posted nine birdies in the tournament, en route to a 12-over par 228 (75-77-76) and a tie for 33rd.
Freshman McCormick Clouser struggled this afternoon, shooting a 10-over par 82, falling to 37th and 13-over par 229 (77-70-82). Clouser had a team high 12 birdies this weekend.
Rounding out the Spartan lineup, junior Dave Ellis tied for 45th at 16-over par 232 (77-76-79) and senior Chris Mory tied for 70th at 24-over par 240 (83-81-76).
No. 37 Indiana came from behind on Sunday to win the team title by two shots over No. 26 Iowa. The Hoosiers shot a 6-under 282 today to finish the tournament at 13-over 877. No. 18 Kent State was third, just three strokes behind IU, while No. 39 Illinois was five shots back in fourth.
Illinois' Luke Guthrie claimed the individual title by one shot, shooting a 5-under par 67 today to move to 3-under par 213 overall.
The Spartans head to the French Link, Ind. this week for the Big Ten Championships. Action begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.
